Male
Part A · 10 marks · Question 1 · answer in English
Radio interview — host 小林 & sociologist 陈教授, on short videos and youth values.
Female
Female
Question 1 (10 marks)

(a)

1 mark
Why was Mr Zhou invited to the radio program?
✓ What scores marks
  • Answer in ENGLISH, in a sentence or two — just the fact the question asks for.
  • The audio plays twice: locate the answer on the first listen, confirm the detail on the second.
✗ What loses marks
  • Over-writing — (a) is a low-mark fact, not a paragraph.
  • Answering in Chinese, or giving a detail other than the one asked.
How to structure your answerOne or two sentences in English — the exact fact asked, no more.
Marking criteria
1Identifies why Mr Zhou was invited to the radio program, according to his explanation in the conversation
Sample answer

Mr Zhou was invited to discuss why more young people are taking part in community volunteering.

3 marks
According to Mr Zhou, what problems do some young people experience in city life?
✓ What scores marks
  • Answer in ENGLISH as a short paragraph; give the speaker's view PLUS the reasons / examples behind it.
  • Cover every distinct point — a 3-mark question wants about three pieces of detail from the text.
✗ What loses marks
  • Listing language techniques — (b) tests comprehension, not features (save those for (c)).
  • A one-line answer that drops the supporting detail.
How to structure your answerEnglish paragraph: the speaker's view + the reasons/examples (≈ one point per mark).
Marking criteria
3Identifies the problems young people experience in city life, according to Mr Zhou
2Demonstrates some understanding of the problems young people experience in city life, according to Mr Zhou
1Provides some relevant information
Sample answer

Mr Zhou says some young people feel isolated in cities, live next to others without knowing them, and experience pressure or a lack of belonging. He also suggests that a self-centred lifestyle can reduce opportunities for communication and connection.

6 marks
How does Mr Zhou persuade young people to participate in community volunteering? In your answer, refer to both the content and language features used in the conversation.
✓ What scores marks
  • Answer in ENGLISH using TEE: name the Technique → quote the Example in English → explain its Effect on the listener.
  • Cover the speaker's THREE aspects of persuasion (roughly his three turns), 2–3 techniques in total per aspect, each tied back to ‘how it persuades’.
  • Address BOTH content and language features — the question asks for both.
✗ What loses marks
  • Naming a technique with no effect (label-only / 两张皮).
  • Quoting Chinese characters instead of translating; analysing only one aspect.
How to structure your answerEnglish, 3 TEE points (one per aspect): Technique → English quote → Effect; cover content + language.
Marking criteria
6Demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of how Mr Zhou persuades young people to participate in community volunteering, with detailed reference to both the content and use of language features
5Demonstrates a thorough understanding of how Mr Zhou persuades young people, with reference to both the content and use of language features
4Demonstrates a sound understanding of how Mr Zhou persuades young people, with some reference to both the content and use of language features
2–3Demonstrates some understanding of Mr Zhou's persuasion, with some reference to the content and/or use of language features
1Provides some relevant information
Sample answer

Mr Zhou effectively persuades young people by combining emotional appeal, statistical evidence and figurative language. He begins with Anqi's story, showing how a lonely student finds connection through helping an elderly neighbour, which makes volunteering feel personal rather than abstract. He then uses statistics — 72% improving communication skills and 68% feeling less pressure — to make the benefits sound credible. He also contrasts 'only caring about oneself' with 'caring for others' to present volunteering as a step toward maturity. The rhetorical question 'if we all wait for others to act, will the community become better?' challenges listeners to take responsibility. Finally, the proverb 'give roses to others and a fragrance lingers on your own hand' and the bridge metaphor suggest that volunteering benefits both the helper and the community.

Two texts on overseas-Chinese bicultural balance — Text 1: radio monologue · Text 2: 小雅 / 小杰 conversation.

Question 2

  • Adding personal experiences unrelated to the two texts.
  • Summarising only one text; missing the date header or the reflective close.
